NO REST, Full Company Assist to Quarryville FC on a Working Building Fire

12/21/2008 04:30 - 7 Cardinal Dr, East Drumore Township, 2nd alarm Commercial Building, Station 5-1 full company assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. Deputy 5-7 (Welk) had command 5-7. The fire was at The Gambas Co. Metal Stamping. Apparatus from Lancaster, Chester & York Counties battled the blaze.   After 3 hours, the fire was placed under control at 07:31.  Engines 5-1-1 and 5-1-2 assisted with fire suppression, forcing doors and pulling tin.  Tankers 5-1-1 & 5-1-2 shuttled water from a nearby creek. 2 Alarm Working Barn Fire on White Oak Rd, Tanker Assist and a Pair of Standbys

12/18/2008 22:36 - 6573 White Oak Rd, Sadsbury Township, Barn, Station 5-1, Station 5-2 Christiana FC full company, Station 4-2 Gap FC full company, Station 5-7 Quarryville FC, Christiana Ambulance 5-2-1.  Engine & Rescue. LCWC advised of a passerby reporting fire through the roof of a barn at the intersection of Upper Valley Rd & White Oak Rd.  Deputy 5-1 (Graybill) arrived to find a large tobacco shed with fire from the rear & roof.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived, established command 5-1 and requested the 2nd alarm bringing 4 additional tankers (5-7,4-5,26,27) and engine 5-7-2 for the fill site.  The tobacco shed was converted into a vinyl window shop. The storage area was on the top barn floor and the production line was in the basement. Engine 5-1-1 setup the blitz fire on the 1 side of the barn bay and stretched 1 hand line to the basement and 1 to the rear to protect the diesel engine.  Engine 5-2-1 attacked from the other end with a 2-1/2" and 1-3/4" hand lines.  Tankers 5-1-1 & 5-2-2 setup as the fire scene nurse tankers.  Truck 4-2 setup to assist with ventilation. The fire was placed under control in about an hour.  Crews held off on some of the overhauling until PA State Police Fire Marshall Brian Herr arrived.  The damages are estimated at $150,000 and the cause of the fire is under investigation.  Thanks to the ladies auxiliary for drinks, our neighboring companies and Station 21 Union Fire Co. of Oxford Engine 21-2 and Engine 5-7-2 for providing standby coverage.  Station 5-1 had 51 members login for the call.  Pic's courtesy of member Steve Sipos & Chief Woerth.

12/19/2008 12:54 - Engine 5-1-1 relocated to Station 4-5 Kinzers for a scheduled standby from 13:00 to 17:00.  Please keep the Kinzers FC members in your thoughts and prayers after an unfortunate incident. 14:59 - Tanker 5-1-1 assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC on an Apartment Building, 252 White Rock Rd, Colerain Township, 15:14 - Command 5-7 held the box to 5-7 units and redirected Tanker 5-1-1 to Station 5-7 for the standby.

12/13/2008 21:03 - 1255 May Post Office Rd, Eden Township, Barn, full company assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. Captain 5-7 (Ross) arrived to find large hay bales on fire inside the barn.  After the skid loaders removed the large bales from the barn, 5-1 engine crews assisted in extinguishing and breaking the bales apart.  Tankers 5-1-1 & 5-1-2 shuttled water to the scene from station 5-7. Units cleared at 23:06 hours.  Thanks to Christiana FC Tanker 5-2-1 for providing standby coverage for our area.  12/14/2008 03:52 - 215 W. Fourth St, Quarryville Borough, apartment building, full company assist  Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. Units were recalled enroute. 

COLD SNAP brings a BUSY Start for December

12/9/2008 - As of today, our volunteers have answered 16 calls for the month of December. The tankers have been busy assisting and transferring on multiple working fires, including a 2 alarm barn assisting Station 5-8 Rawlinsville FC on Susquehannock Drive, a 2 alarm dwelling assisting Station 4-2 Gap FC on Mt. Vernon Rd, a 2 alarm barn assisting Station 4-8 Ronks FC. on S. Ronks Rd. 11/26/2008 09:18 - 17 E. State St, Dollar General Store, Quarryville Borough, Commercial Building Assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. Engine 5-1-1 & Tanker 5-1-1. Captain 5-7 (Ross) arrived to find an electrical issue, recalled Tanker 5-1-1 and redirected Engine 5-1-1 to Station 5-7 for standby.  19:26 - 7 Stoney Hill Rd, Eden Township, Dwelling Assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. Engine 5-1-1, Tankers 5-1-1, 5-1-2. Units we recalled enroute.  11/26/2008 12:31 - 394 Haiti Rd, Eden Township, Dwelling fire reported in the chimney,  Assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. Engines 5-1-1, 5-1-2 & Tanker 5-1-1.  Engine 5-1-1 crew assisted with ventilation fans, while Tanker 5-1-1 & Engine 5-1-2 staged.

11/25/2008 04:10 - 75 Haiti Rd, Bart Township, Trash, Engine 5-1-1 & Tanker 5-1-1. Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived to find a fully involved phone booth. Engine 5-1-1 arrived and extinguished the fire with the bumper line.  Station 5-7 Quarryville FC. was also dispatched to 1566 May Post Office Rd in Eden Township for trash as well.  Captain 5-7 (Ross) arrived to find a dumpster on fire.  04:33 - Captain 5-7 was checking the area and found another dumpster on fire at 239 Haiti Rd in Bart Township.  Engines 5-1-1 and 5-7-5 responded to this incident. PA State Police are investigating the incidents.

Full Company Assist to Paradise FC on a Working Hog Barn Fire

11/20/2008 21:02 - 573 Strasburg Rd, Paradise Township, Barn, Engine 5-1-1, Tankers 5-1-1 & 5-1-2 assist Station 4-7 Paradise FC. Lt. 4-7-2 reported fire showing from a 200 foot hog barn with exposures.  Chief 4-7-3 (Wenger) established command and requested the 2nd alarm which brought additional tankers and Engine 5-1-2. Engine 5-1-1 laid a supply line back the driveway and utilized the Blitzfire portable monitor and hand lines.  Tanker 5-1-1 setup nurse tanker operations at the end of the driveway and supplied Engine 5-1-1 which was also supplying Gap FC Truck 4-2 .  Gordonville FC Hose 4-3 pumped a fold a tank supplying Engine 4-7-1 & Tanker 4-5. Engine 5-1-2 laid a supply line from Blackhorse Rd across a downed corn field to the east side of the fire building and put 2 hand lines into service to assist with fire suppression.  Master stream operations and properly placed hand lines protected the 2nd hog barn and office area.  Crews pulled tin and awaited a track hoe for building demolition and mop up.  Final units cleared at 01:49. 11/04/2008 08:19 - 200 Creek Rd, Sadsbury Township, vehicle accident, Engine 5-1-1 assist Station 5-2 Christiana FC. 5-2 units arrived to find 1 vehicle down a steep embankment with no patients. Engine 5-1-1 was released shortly after arrival. When returning from the 5-2 accident at 08:46- the company was alerted to the intersection of S. Belmont Rd & Georgetown Rd, Paradise Township for a vehicle accident.  Engines 5-1-1, 5-1-2 & QRS 5-1 arrived to find a 3 vehicle accident with injuries.  Crews assisted with patient care and roadway hazard control.

11/11/2008 02:49 - Standby-Transfer, Engine 5-1-1 & Engine 5-13-1 Robert Fulton FC relocate to Chester County Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford Chief 21 (Terry) arrived to find heavy fire showing from the second floor on the Alpha/Bravo corner of a 2.5 story duplex and requested the working fire dispatch.  Station 21 was assisted by units from Stations 12/22 West Grove, 8 Rising Sun MD, 5-7 Quarryville and 27 Cochranville.  At 03:05 Chief 21 requested 2 additional engines for manpower.  Chester fireboard redirected the transfer units Engines 5-1-1 & 5-13-1 to the fire scene at 19 S. Fourth St. in Oxford Borough.  Crews assisted with overhaul in the second floor.  Crews returned at 06:03 hours.

Another busy weekend --  Assist Quarryville FC on a Barn Fire

10/31/2008 12:48 - Intersection of Bell Rd & Sproul Rd, Colerain Township, vehicle, Engine 5-1-1, Tankers 5-1-1 & 5-1-2. LCWC reported a combine on fire at the intersection. Units arrived to find only a small brush fire. 19:13 - 43 E Gay St, Christiana Borough, Dwelling assist Christiana FC, Engine 5-1-1 & Tanker 5-1-1, units were held after dispatch.

 11/01/2008 - Engine 5-1-1 with a crew of 8 under the direction of Deputy Chief LeFevre, headed down to Chester County Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford  to provide standby coverage while there members enjoyed their annual fire company banquet.  Members were joined by Engine 18 from Cecil County Station 8 Rising Sun FC. 19:20 -  630 Barren Rd, East Nottingham Twp, Brush, 19:53 - Woods, 96 Elizabeth Way, Elk Twp, 20:27 - Vehicle accident, Upper Oxford Twp, in front of Lincoln University. Returning from the accident at 20:59 - Engine 5-1-1 was dispatched to cover Rescue 21 on the 1st alarm working barn fire back in Lancaster County assisting Station 5-7 Quarryville FC,  287 Locust Ln, East Drumore Township.  Engine 5-1-1 was directed to an onsite pond to setup drafting operations. Engine 1 supplied Engine 5-13-1 Robert Fulton Fire Company for over 4 hours. The crew assisted with pulling tin and working hand lines.   21:14 - Tanker 5-1-1 was transferred to Station 5-7 Quarryville FC 21:32 - Tanker 5-1-1 responded to the scene to shuttle water in the tanker shuttle. Working Chimney Fire with Extension into the Walls.

10/28/2008 17:12 - 340 S. Belmont Rd, Paradise Township, Engines 5-1-1, 5-1-2, Tankers 5-1-1, 5-1-2, Squad 5-1 and Truck 5-7 Quarryville FC.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived with a working chimney fire with extension into the walls. The vinyl siding was melting and smoking on side delta beside the chimney at the 1st and 2nd floors.  Engine 5-1-1 pulled the bumper line, crews split to the basement firebox and 1st floor stove to open up.  Engine 5-1-2 laddered side delta to open up the exterior wall to check for extension.  Tower 5-7 setup on side delta to access the top of the chimney.  Truck crews had a tough time trying to open up the clogged chimney with a weighted anchor on the chain.  The homeowner was not sure the last time the chimney was cleaned. Squad 5-1 crews setup fans for ventilation.  The tankers supplied Engine 5-1-1. After an extensive chimney overhaul, crews cleared at 19:40 hours. Special thanks to Engine 5-7-2 Quarryville FC and Chester County Engine 21-2 & Tanker 21 Union Fire Co. of Oxford for providing standby coverage.

Another busy weekend --  Standby's , Training and Accidents

10/23/2008 07:26 - Engine 5-1-1 relocate to Chester County Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford  08:04 - Minutes after arriving at station 21, Chester Fireboard redirected Engine 5-1-1 to relocate to Cecil County Station 8 Rising Sun FC.while they operated at a working house fire on Wilson Rd. 08:52 -  Engine 5-1-1 along with an engine from Harford County Station 1 Level VFC and Cecil Paramedic 1 were alerted to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Telegraph Rd & Cecil Dr. After assisting the paramedic unit with patient packaging and fluid control, the engine returned back to Station 8 and cleared at 11:28 hours.

10/25/2008 08:00 - Tanker 5-1-1 assisted with the Essentials of Firefighting Module 2 class being held at Quarryville Fire Company.  Our station has 3 members in the class.  Tanker 5-1-1 assisted with the fold-a-tank evolutions. 10/25/2008 16:30 -  Engine 5-1-1 with a crew of 8 headed down to Chester County Station 22 West Grove Fire Co. to provide standby coverage while there members were at their annual fire company banquet. We were joined for dinner by our neighbors Station 5-7 Quarryville FC.  After dinner, Engine 5-7-4 headed down to the substation in New London.  Past Chief and Chief Emeritus Johns Chambers hung around for the evening as our tour guide.  Crews watched the Penn State football game and the Philadelphia Phillies World series game. No calls were handled.

10/26/2008 11:09 - Intersection of Mine Rd & White Oak Rd in the Village of Nickel Mines, Bart Township, vehicle accident standby Engine 5-1-1, QRS 5-1 & Christiana Ambulance 5-2-1.  Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived with a 2 vehicle accident with blocking.  Engine 5-1-1 assisted with vehicle debris and fluid clean up and QRS 5-1 performed patient care.  17:20 - 846 Georgetown Rd, vehicle accident involving a motorcycle class 1, Engine 5-1-1, QRS 5-1 & LEMSA Medics 6-12-10, 100.  Deputy 5-1 (LeFevre) arrived with a motorcycle vs. horse and buggy with 1 patient. Medic 6-12-10 transported the patient to a local hospital and fire police assisted with traffic control.

10/22/2008 08:14 - Intersection of Route 372 & Route 896 in the Village of Greentree, Bart Township, vehicle accident with entrapment class 1, Engine 5-1-1, Engine 5-1-2, Ambulance 5-2-1 Christiana & Medic 7-7-9 SVEMS.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived to find a 2 vehicle accident with 1 confined in a sedan and established Command 5-1.  Engine 5-1-1 arrived at 08:21 and popped open the driver side door with the Amkus hydraulic rescue tool spreaders.  Extrication was complete at 08:30 hours.  Engine 5-1-2 assisted with fire suppression and roadway cleanup.  Fire police assisted with intersection traffic control.  EMS units transported the patient to a local hospital.  Units cleared at 09:07 hours.

Another Busy Weekend

10/10/2008 19:47 - 1543 Valley Rd, Bart Township, Barn.  The additional information from LCWC stated a passerby by saw a large volume of fire and thought it may be a barn on fire.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived to find a controlled burning of trash and recalled the assignment.  10/11/2008 01:29 Tanker 5-1-1 assist 5-7 Quarryville FC on a working dwelling fire at 10 Ann Place in East Drumore Township.  At 02:00 Engine 5-1-1 standby transfer to 5-7 Quarryville FC For pictures of the dwelling fire click here to see them on Station 5-7's website.  Tanker and Engine crews returned just before 05:00.  Crews then went over to the banquet hall to assist in serving over 375 patrons at our monthly All You Can Eat Breakfast.  After breakfast, Tankers 5-1-1 and 5-1-2 were setup out back for additional driver pump training.  Both fold-a-tanks were setup and members worked on drafting and siphoning water from the fold-a-tanks. 10/12/2008 16:16 Work detail.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) was alerted by LCWC about assisting Harford County Station 6 Whiteford FC on the removal of a horse that was stuck in a muddy creek bed.  Several members loaded up on Chief 5-1's vehicle and headed over.  Just as they arrived at Station 6, the horse had been freed.

QRS and Fire Police Assist with Mountain Lion Attack

10/9/2008 17:44 - 20 Mt. Pleasant Rd, Sadsbury Township, medical assist injured person from an animal bite, QRS 5-1, Ambulance 5-2-1and Medic 6-12-10.  Additional reports from LCWC were that a subject was bitten by a cougar.  EMS crews arrived and treated the patient for scratches and bites. At 21:04 Stations 5-1 Bart FC, 5-7 Quarryville FC & 5-2 Christiana FC were dispatched, at the request of PA State Police, to assist with traffic and crowd control in the area.  The PA Game Commission was conducting an investigation and search for the cougar.  Shortly after 23:00 hours, the game wardens called off the search until daylight.  For the local newspaper related article please click here.

QRS and Engine Assist with Farm Machinery Accident

10/4/2008 16:50 - 78 Furnace Rd, Bart Township, medical assist with subject that was injured in a farming accident QRS 5-1, Ambulance 4-3-1 Gordonville, Medic 7-7-9 SVEMS and Rescue/Engine 5-1-1. The subject was running a corn picker, lost his balance and fell off.  The corn picker ran over the victim, then drug him several yards where he was thrown free of the corn picker.  QRS 5-1 arrived with 3 minutes of dispatch and began patient assessment and packaging.  The ambulance and medic transported the patient to a local trauma hospital.

The Bart Township Fire Company would like to wish the local victim a speedy recovery.

 

Engine & Tanker Assist Quarryville on Working Dwelling Fire

9/24/2008 19:00 - 5721 Street Rd, Colerain Township, Engine 5-1-1 & Tanker 5-1-1 assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC.  Station 5-7 and Chester County Station 21 Union Fire Co. of Oxford were on the initial box alarm. Lt. 5-7-1 (J. Neff) arrived with a working fire and requested Engine 5-1-1 and Tanker 5-1-1 to assist.  Engine 1 & Tanker 1 were already on the street and checked up immediately after the request. Engine 5-1-1 arrived, reported to the manpower pool and the crew was quickly put to work relieving 5-7 crews overhauling the fire room. Tanker 5-1-1 stood by in case additional water was needed.  At 19:42, Engine 5-1-1 was released from the fire scene and headed back to Station 5-7 to provide standby coverage for the 5-7 fire district.      Click here for additional photos on Station 5-7's website

Vehicle Accident in the Village of Greentree

9/11/2008 06:50 - Intersection of Route 372 & Route 896 in the Village of Greentree, Bart Township, vehicle accident class 2.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived to find a 2 vehicle accident with no injures involving a dump truck. Engine 5-1-1arrived and cleaned up the extensive oil and debris spilled all over the roadway. Additional fire police were requested from Station 5-7 Quarryville FC.  Crews awaited the arrival of Null's Towing of Cochranville to remove the dump truck.

Public Service - Animal Rescue

9/10/2008 09:33 - 434 S. Belmont Rd, Paradise Township, Engine 5-1-1 for the public service. Chief 5-1 (Woerth) went enroute and was advised by LCWC that three mules hooked to a farm wagon full of corn had fallen into an 8 foot deep manure pit that was full. Chief Woerth requested a backhoe to be dispatched from Lynford Stoltzfus Excavating Inc. along with Squad 5-1 in addition to Engine 5-1-1. Engine 5-1-1 arrived and stabilized the wagon, which was on the edge of the manure pit. The tongue of the wagon was removed with a chain saw. The wagon was then moved away from the pit and the chain link fence removed to allow access for the backhoe. The owner and neighbors held the mule’s heads above the manure so fire company personnel could secure the sling around the first mule.  The backhoe arrived with Captain 5-1-2 as the operator. The backhoe was in the area and arrived shortly after being dispatched. The first mule was rescued immediately. The sling was quickly secured to the second mule. The second and third mules were removed simultaneously due to the entanglement of the harnesses. Two of the three mules survived. The second mule was caught under the tongue of the wagon and succumbed to his injuries.

Tropical Storm Hanna keeps company busy with Public Service Calls

9/6/2008 - Today tropical storm Hanna hit the area with steady rain and wind.  The station was dispatched to remove 2 trees on Mt. Pleasant Rd by the covered bridge and 1 on Quaker Church Rd in Bart Township.

8/29/2008 - Tonight Bart Township Fire Company Firefighter/EMT Rich Ressel left in a convoy headed to New Orleans, LA to assist with Hurricane Gustav.  Rich works for the Phoenixville Fire Department West End in Chester County.  Phoenixville EMS is part of the Pennsylvania Strike Team.  Phoenixville's EMS unit is designed to respond to emergencies across the country without depleting the state's EMS resources.  Good luck and stay safe Rich. Another MVA involving Motorcycle Assisting Gap FC

8/16/2008 14:34 - 5331 Strasburg Rd, Salisbury Township, Engine 5-1-1 assist Station 4-2 Gap FC on a vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. Gap FC units were out assisting Kinzers FC on a barn fire. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived established command 4-2, advised of 1 motorcyclist down in the roadway barely conscious with severe trauma and requested aero medical for a direct fly.  Rescue 4-2 & Truck 4-2 cleared the barn fire and headed to the mva. Rescue 4-2 and Engine 5-1-1 assisted with patient care.  Ambulance 5-2-1 Christiana and Medic 7-7-9 SVEMS loaded the patient and headed to the Salisbury Township Park where Truck 4-2 (Chief Kurtz) setup a landing zone for Sky Flight Care 1 out of Brandywine Hospital.  The patient was flown to Lancaster General Hospital's Trauma center.  Units remained on-scene until 15:46 assisting with traffic control and the PSP troopers investigation.

8/15/2008 19:06 - Intersection of Georgetown Rd & Furnace Rd, Bart Township, vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. Units arrived to find 1 motorcycle that struck a telephone pole and our fire company events sign. Engine 5-1-1 assisted with traffic control and QRS 5-1 assisted the motorcycle rider. Crews awaited arrival of the PSP trooper.

8/5/2008 22:41 - 500 Block Creek Rd, Sadsbury Township, vehicle fire. Deputy 5-1 (LeFevre) arrived to find a vehicle well off.  Deputy 5-1 advised the vehicle fire was the result of a vehicle accident car vs. tree and the driver fled on foot.  Engine 5-1-1 OIC (Capt. 2 Kreider) arrived and pulled the front bumper line.  The gas lines burnt off off the vehicle making it a large fuel fed fire.  The foam pack was inserted in the hand line and make quick work knocking down the fire.  Tankers 5-1-1 and 5-1-2 were also on scene in case additional water was needed.  A crew was also in station for Engine 5-1-2 during the call.

8/4/2008 11:42 - Intersection of White Oak Rd & Georgetown Rd (896), Paradise Township, vehicle accident. Engine 5-1-1 OIC (Capt. 1 Fisher) arrived with a 2 vehicle accident.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived established command and advised the driver of the station wagon was confined. Engine 5-1-1 removed the driver side door at 12:11 hours allowing EMS from QRS 5-1, Ambulance 4-3-1 and Medic 7-7-9 to evaluate the patient.  Units cleared at 12:36 hours.

7/31/2008 10:48 - 651 Noble Rd, Sadsbury Township, Engine 5-1-1, Engine 5-1-2, Tanker 5-1-1 assist Station 5-2 Christiana FC on a barn fire. Engine 5-1-1 arrived at 10:59 with heavy smoke showing from a horse barn. Engine 5-2-1 dropped the supply line back the lane. Engine 5-1-1's crew pulled the bumper line and made a quick knock of the fire on the barn floor.  Command 5-2 placed the fire under control at 11:04 hours. 7/28/2008 16:43 - 12 Broad St, Christiana Borough, Engine 5-1-1 assist Station 5-2 Christiana FC on a dwelling. Deputy 5-2 arrived on scene with smoke showing and confirmed fire on the 2nd floor. Engine 5-1-1 was assigned to RIT in the yard across the street from the fire building.  At 17:12 command 5-2 requested Engine 5-1-2 to assist with manpower.

7/20/2008 21:53 - Engine 5-1-1 with a crew of 8, under the direction of Captain 5-1-2 Kreider relocated to Chester County Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford while they operated a working barn fire in East Nottingham Township. Station 5-2 Christiana FC Tanker 5-2-1 provided a tanker company transfer to Station 21. At 23:00, Engine 5-1-1 & Tanker 5-2-1 were alerted to 310 W Locust St. Oxford Borough for a smoke investigation. Units determined it to be smoke from the barn fire 21 units were working. Units cleared Station 21 at 01:27.

7/18/2008 19:46 - Intersection of Georgetown Rd & Keneagy Hill Rd, Paradise Township, vehicle accident standby.  Captain 5-1-2 Kreider arrived to find a 22 foot tow behind travel trailer on it's side blocking traffic. The camper fell off the edge of the road, started to sway out of control and overturned. Null's Towing of Cochranville was immediately notified to upright the camper. Farm Rescue

6/9/2008 06:37 - 281 Christiana Pike, Sadsbury Township, Farm Rescue, Station 5-1, Gap Rescue 4-2, Ambulance 5-2-1 and Medic 7-7-9. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) went enroute and was advised by LCWC the caller saw an Amish boy stuck under a cultipacker in the field and the cell phone cut off. The second call reported the subject up walking around & bleeding. Chief 5-1 arrived, updated the location and recalled Rescue 4-2. The patient was transported to a local hospital by EMS.

6/8/2008 10:28 - 613 Noble Rd, Sadsbury Township, Gas Leak, Engine 5-1-1 assist Station 5-2 Christiana FC & Gap Rescue 4-2 and Ambulance 5-2-1. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) & Chief 4-2 (Kurtz) arrived to find 2 LP tanks actively leaking.  Station 5-1 FF Shaub found a hose that was used to fill spare cylinders leaking. He controlled the situation by shutting off a valve under the tank. Engine 5-1-1 arrived and ventilated the nearby dwelling. Deputy 5-2 (Reimold) placed the situation under control and held the assignment to the units on scene. Units cleared at 10:46.

When Engine 5-1-1 arrived on location at station 21, Chester Fireboard redirected them to the fire scene for manpower at 372 Harrisville Rd on a working dwelling fire assisting Cecil County Station 8 Rising Sun FC. State St, Quarryville Borough, Engine 5-1-1 Transfer station 5-7 Quarryville FC.  Engine 5-1-1 responded with a crew of 8.  The Quarryville brothers were out battling a raging woods fire at Nottingham Park in Chester County.  At 16:11 Engine 5-1-1 ran an AFA at Quarryville Presbyterian Home and returned back to station 5-7.  18:09  Engine 5-1-1 from station 5-7 and Engine 5-1-2 were alerted for vehicle accident class 1 in Colerain Township at the intersection of Georgetown Rd (Route 896) & Maple Shade Rd.  Chief 5-1 arrived with 1 injury.  5/7/2008 05:19 - 746 Noble Rd, Bart Township, woods.  Chief 5-1-2 arrived with a small woods fire.

4/18/2008 23:33 - 1061 Gap Rd, Sadsbury Township, dwelling, assist station 4-2 Gap FC LCWC advised the resident had a hot chimney with some flames on 2nd floor. Chief 4-2 (Kurtz) arrived and established command 4-2.  Engine 5-1-1 with 8 was instructed to establish RIT on side bravo.  Tankers 5-1-1 & 5-1-2 held on the roadway and Engine 5-1-2 with 5 was available on scene to handle calls in the 4-2 & 5-1 fire district. Gap was assisted by Bart Twp, Christiana, Kinzers Fire Companies & Christiana Community Ambulance. Units cleared at 00:36

3/30/2008 15:52 - Engine 5-1-1 relocate Chester County Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford . When Engine 5-1-1 responded, they were redirected to the fire scene at Herr Drive in East Nottingham Township. The tanker task force was hit bringing in Tanker 5-1.  Engine 5-1-2 responded as well.  Both engines sent crews to manpower staging where they were rotated in and out of the woods on several hand lines.  Tanker 5-1 shuttled water to the portable ponds setup.  Several acres burnt up along with a large pile of tires.  Thanks to Gap Fire Company Engine 4-2-2 for handling the engine relocate.

3/28/2008 12:39 - 190 Scotland Rd, East Drumore Township, dwelling, assist station 5-7 Quarryville.  Captain 5-7 (Ross) arrived to find smoke from the eaves.  Engine 5-7-4 arrived and forced the front door.  Smoked was banked down to the floor. Crews found the fire in the laundry room and extinguished the fire.  Crews opened up and checked for extension. Engine 5-1-1 setup RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) in the front yard. Carbon Monoxide Investigation and Public Service Animal Rescue

3/27/2008 02:35 - 5070 White Oak Rd, Bart Township, Investigation. At 02:06 QRS 5-1, Ambulance 5-2-1 & Medic 6-12-10 were dispatched to this location for a child in seizures.  When EMS crews entered the dwelling there portable CO detectors on there medical bags alerted with readings of over 200 ppm. EMS crews immediately removed the family from the dwelling and treated them in the ambulances.  QRS 5-1 FF/EMT Levi K. Glick notified LCWC of the situation and to dispatch the fire company for a CO investigation.  Engine 5-1-1's crew entered with the CO meter to take readings. Readings with the structure ventilated were over 100 ppm. Other crew members laddered the roof to check the chimney and check the coal burning stove in the basement.  The roof crews found the chimney clogged and the basement crew found the smoke pipe completely clogged.  Members talked with the occupants regarding the importance of having CO alarms in the residence.  Luckily for these occupants, they escaped without serious injury.  Units cleared at 03:16.

3/26/2008 16:06 - 674 Pumping Station Rd, Colerain Township, public service, Engine 5-1-1 assist Station 5-7 Quarryville FC.  Engine 5-1-1 was requested for the animal sling to assist with the removal of a cow that fell in a 6-7 foot manure pit. 3/25/2008 08:23 - 183 Wesley Rd, Colerain Township, dwelling, assist station 5-7 Quarryville.  Captain 5-7 (Ross) arrived to find a working fire side on side C.  Engine 5-1-1 with 8 was assigned to RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) and they setup in the front yard.  Engine 5-1-2 with 5 was assigned to establish a draft site for the tanker shuttle on Wesley Rd at the bridge.  Tanker & Squad 5-1 were also on scene.  All crews worked on extensive overhaul of the dwelling.  Additional tanker were requested from Station 5-13 Robert Fulton FC and Station 21 Union-Oxford FC.  Units cleared the scene at 22:51 hours. Thanks to Christiana FC Tanker 5-2-1 for providing the standby at station 5-1.

MVA with Entrapment and Tanker Transfer/Assist

3/3/2008 05:37 - Intersection of Routes 896 & 372 in the village of Green Tree, Bart Township, vehicle accident with entrapment. LCWC advised they were receiving multiple calls and a helicopter was placed on standby.  Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived with a 2 vehicle accident and assumed Command 5-1.  Engine 5-1-1's crew began stabilization. Rescue 5-7 was special called to assist due to a power switch issue for the hydraulic tool pump on Engine 5-1-1. The problem was resolved and Rescue 5-7 recalled. The patient was removed through the front windshield at 05:55 and transported to a local hospital. QRS 5-1, Ambulance 5-2-1 and SVEMS Medic 7-7-9 assisted with patient care. 3/2/2008 22:02 - Tanker 5-1 transfer Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford. 21 was out on a vehicle fire on Street Rd and tanker 21 was assisting on a working barn in Rising Sun, Cecil County, Maryland. Tanker 5-1 with (Chief Engineer) Levi K. Glick wheeling and Chief 5-1 ("Hen" Woerth) OIC setout on what would be a 3 county, 2 state tour in the old tanker. At 23:00 - Tanker 5-1 along with 21 units were alerted to cover Cecil County Maryland Station 8 Rising Sun on an Apartment Building at 12 W. Main St. in Rising Sun.  Tanker 5-1 staged then returned back to Station 21 until 23:41.

4th Chimney Fire of 2008

2/27/2008 10:22 - 1716 Mine Rd, Bart Township, dwelling fire reported in the chimney, station 5-1 & Gap FC Truck 4-2. Chief 5-1 arrived and was advised by firefighter Brian Herr there was heavy smoke in the attic of a 2-1/2 story single-family dwelling. Engine 5-1-1 responded with a crew of 8 volunteers. Chief 5-1 passed command to Engine 5-1-1 and assumed operations. Engine 5-1-1 was the first in and sent a crew of 2 to the second floor and attic with the tic to check for extension. The other crew of 4 went to the basement to extinguish the fire in the wood stove. Captain 5-1-1 (Kreider) had Division 1. Truck 4-2 (Gap Fire Company) responded with a crew of 6 volunteers along with Squad 4-2 with a crew of 5. Truck 4-2 was the next in unit and went into aerial operations on side B-Bravo sending a crew of 3 to the roof to check for extension and extinguish the fire in the chimney. Truck 4-2 also provided a crew of 4 to ventilate the basement and first floor. Tanker 5-1 responded with 2 volunteers and secured Engine 5-1-1's water supply. Engine 5-7-2 (Quarryville Fire Company) relocated to Station 5-1 with a crew of 5 volunteers to cover the area and also provide much needed help at the sale grounds with this being the busiest week in Georgetown. Units operated for just over 45 min. before clearing.

Busy Weekend: Spill Control, Controlled Burn, Chimney Fire

2/15/2008 16:16 - 2100 block Mine Rd, Bart Township, spill control. Fire police and Engine 5-1-1 assisted with an unoccupied horse & pig cart that crashed into a passenger vehicle.  2/16/2008 08:50 - 5100 block White Oak Rd, Bart Township, controlled burn. Deputy 5-1 (LeFevre), Engine 5-1-2 & Tanker 5-1 assisted a resident burning a pile of debris. 2/17/2008 19:49 - 1096 Noble Rd, Bart Township, dwelling fire reported in the chimney station 5-1 and Truck 5-7 Quarryville. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived with a light smoke condition. Station 5-7 was dispatched for a 2nd call there district at Musser's Market. Truck 5-7 was rerouted to their first due call. Engine 5-1-1 arrived and split crews. One crew setup the extension ladder to the roof and the other went inside with the chimney kit to cleanout the fire box and check for extension. Crews dropped the chimney chains to clear the chimney of debris. Thanks to Gap Engine 4-2-2 for handling the relocate.

Rescue/Engine Runs Vehicle Accident with Entrapment

2/14/2008 07:13 - Intersection of Georgetown Rd & White Oak Rd, Paradise Township, vehicle accident with entrapment. Robert Fulton Fire Co. Deputy 5-13 Rob Sample was on the scene advising 1 patient in a van confined. Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived with a 2 vehicle MVA with a passenger van on it's side with 1 confined and assumed Command 5-1.  Engine 5-1-1, under the direction of Rescue-Captain Kreider, stabilized the vehicle. Engine 5-1-2 assisted Engine 5-1-1's crew utilizing saw-all's and Amkus hydraulic rescue cutters to remove the A pillar posts and flapped the roof open to gain access to the patient. Extrication time was 11 minutes from time of arrival. QRS 5-1 and Medic 6-12-10 then boarded the patient for transport to the hospital. Crews swept up the roadway and cleared at 08:13. Great job to everyone who assisted.

Dwelling, Working Room & Contents Fire

2/6/2008 03:17 - 243 Furnace Rd, Bart Township, dwelling, Stations 5-1,  5-7 Quarryville (full company), 5-2 Christiana (Tanker 5-2-2) & Medic 7-7-9. LCWC advised the house was filling with smoke & they told the occupants to evacuate. Chief 5-1 (Woerth) arrived to find a room & contents fire & was checking on the occupants. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) established Command 5-1. Engine 5-1-1's crew extinguished the fire with the bumper line, while Engine 5-1-2's crew pulled a 2nd line off E1 to backup E1's crew. Crews opened up the wall & ceiling checking for extension. Tanker 5-1 supplied E1. Truck 5-7 setup the PPV fan for ventilation. The fire was placed under control at 03:37 and held to 5-1 units & Truck 5-7. SVEMS Medic 7-7-9 & LEMSA Medic 6-12-10 transported 3 occupants to a local hospital for evaluation. 2 of the occupants crawled out the 2nd floor window to an adjacent window on the other side of the house to safety. P.S.P. Fire Marshall Jamie Dewalt arrived to investigate the fire. Damages are estimated at $7,500.00.  Final units cleared at 05:56.

5 Engine Company Transfers for the Week

Over the past week the station provided 5 engine company transfers. 2 transfers to Station 5-7 Quarryville while they worked a mobile home fire in their 1st due on Spring Valley Rd and assisted Rawlinsville on a working house fire. Special thanks to Quarryville Fire Company for providing Pizza for supper. 2 transfers to Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford while they assisted Stations 12/22 West Grove FC on a dwelling and Cecil County Station 8 Rising Sun on another dwelling. Special thanks to Union Fire & EMS of Oxford  for the pizza for lunch. The other transfer was to Station 5-8 Rawlinsville while they assisted in removing a patient from the Pinnacle hiking trail.  We are happy to assist the brotherhood anytime.

1/26/2008 05:45 - Tanker 5-1 was requested to transfer to Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford. Station 21 was working a multi-alarm barn fire on Kings Row Rd in Hickory Hill (Click here for the story & pic's on 21's website)  06:47 - Chester County fireboard alerted the Standby companies (Engine 27-1 Cochranville FC & Tanker 5-1) along with EMS from Station 21 to an MVA with ejection on Forge Rd in East Nottingham Township. Tanker 5-1 chauffer, FF/EMT Levi K. Glick, assisted with patient care, while Deputy Chief LeFevre established the landing zone for Sky Flight Care 1 (Click here for the story & pic's on 21's website).  19:39 - 143 Quaker Church Rd, Bart Township, Dwelling, Station 5-1, Station 4-2 Gap & Station 5-2 Christiana for 2 tankers. LCWC advised of a fire in the wall behind the woodstove. Deputy 5-1 LeFevre arrived with nothing showing. Engine 5-1-1's crew opened up the wall and checked for extension with the TIC. The assignment was downgraded and held to to 5-1 units & Truck 4-2. Units cleared at 20:19 hours.

1/23/2008 11:54 - Intersection of Valley Rd & S. Vintage Rd, Bart Township, Vehicle Accident with reported entrapment. LCWC advised Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) of a 2 vehicle accident 1 patient unable to get out of 1 of the vehicles. FP 5-1-1 (T. Wise) arrived and confirmed negative entrapment. Snowfall Brings Multiple Calls for Service

1/17/2008 17:28 -  Intersection of Georgetown Rd & White Oak Rd, Paradise Township, Vehicle Accident Standby. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived to find 1 school bus over the embankment. The bus driver safely evacuated the 3 elementary school children on board out the rear emergency exit of the bus into a passerby's van to keep warm. No injuries. The weather deteriorated very quickly. 17:47 - A second call for Fire Police was dispatched in Paradise Township at 701 Georgetown Rd. A tractor and trailer & various other vehicles were stuck on the hill.  21:08 - Fire Police were dispatched to assist Station 5-7 Quarryville on Scotland Rd, East Drumore Township for poles & wires down.

MVA  - Multiple Poles and Wires Down

1/16/2008 20:50 -  Just as the SCBA refresher was wrapping up, the power went out at at station and the tones dropped. 1321 Georgetown Rd, Bart Township, Vehicle accident. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived with multiple poles & wires down across the roadway. Deputy 5-1 (LeFevre) established command. A pickup truck traveling southbound snapped off 2 poles in a row and came to rest in a front yard. The occupant crawled out a small hole in the passenger side cab and fled the scene. Crews searched the fields for the occupant. PP&L arrived with multiple crews to repair the downed poles & wires. Units on scene: Engine 5-1-1, QRS 5-1, Ambulance 5-2-1.

1st Call of 2008 -- Chimney Fire -- 14 Degrees !

1/3/2008 06:14 - 91 Windy Top Rd, Sadsbury Township, chimney, station 5-1 & Quarryville Truck 5-7. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived to find embers from the chimney. Engine 5-1-1 cleaned out the woodstove firebox & stovepipe. Crews opened the outside cleanout at the bottom of the chimney to find several buckets of ash laying. Truck 5-7 setup & dropped the chimney chains. Thanks to all crews for coming out so early and braving the subzero wind chill weather.

Dwelling, turns out to be working garage fire.

1/5/2008 18:02 - 357 Bell Rd, Colerain Township, dwelling, stations 5-1,  5-7 Quarryville, Station 21 Union Fire Co .No.1 of Oxford for a tanker. LCWC advised of a fire in an unattached garage. Captain 5-7 (Ross), in the area, reported a working fire. Chief 5-1-2 (Graybill) arrived and established Command. Engine 5-1-1 crews made a quick knock with the bumper line. The incident was placed under control at 18:15 and command held the assignment to 5-1 & Tower 5-7. Tower 5-7's crew assisted in opening up the A/D corner garage wall. Units cleared at 18:57.
